Serostim^® [somatropin (rDNA origin) for injection] is a human growth hormone and the only therapy for HIV-wasting FDA-approved to increase weight and lean body mass (LBM), and improve physical endurance. It is indicated for the treatment of HIV wasting in patients receiving antiretroviral therapy.

Serostim^® helps your body build and maintain weight and lean body mass. It also allows your metabolism to function more normally, using fat for energy instead of lean body mass.

Studies have shown that patients with HIV wasting who were given Serostim^® for 12 weeks significantly increased their weight, lean body mass, physical endurance, and reported that they felt better in terms of decreased concern over weight and appearance, increased pleasure in eating and an increase in health-related quality of life outcomes. Patients who continued to use Serostim^® for an additional 12 weeks maintained or further increased these positive outcomes.

One third of patients reported joint pain and swelling. These side effects are usually manageable with non-prescription pain medicine. In some cases, your doctor may reduce the dose of Serostim^®. Talk to your doctor to see if Serostim^® is right for you.
