Endocrine System

HIV-associated wasting may affect a patient's endocrine system. The system is comprised of glands that produce hormones. These hormones regulate bodily functions such as growth and development, metabolism and reproduction. Problems with hormones can occur in people affected by HIV. These problems can lead to changes with how the body converts food and stored fat into energy.

Growth hormone (GH) is produced by the pituitary gland and has a role in the maintenance of body weight and lean body mass. Weight loss, loss of muscle strength and low energy are some of the symptoms reported by people with HIV-associated wasting.
