General Health Considerations

According to the American Dietetic Association and the Dietitians of Canada, medical nutritional therapy should be an important part of the ongoing healthcare of persons with HIV infection.

In developing a nutritional treatment strategy for HIV wasting, there are three key considerations that you and your healthcare provider should consider. These include:

  • Treatment options such as appetite stimulants, oxandrolone (an anabolic steroid), and the growth hormone, Serostim® [somatropin (rDNA origin) for injection].
  • Identifying and treating the underlying cause of wasting
  • Diet and exercise

Diet and exercise, medications, nutritional counseling and supplementation should be considered as part of your overall treatment approach to help replenish nutrients and increase weight. It is also important to consider your lifestyle, including: cultural background, ethnic or religious considerations related to food, living situation, and employment. Notify your doctor if you smoke, have allergies, food intolerance, or disabilities.

Always talk with your healthcare provider first about your health and any plans you may have for modifying your diet or exercise routine.
