A discussion with Tony Mills, MD

Dr. Mills underscores the importance of keeping track of unintended weight loss and decrease in physical endurance in patients with HIV, as HIV-associated wasting can have a major impact even on those patients with full viral suppression.

Dr. Tony Mills received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. He completed his residency and fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. He is an assistant professor of Clinical Medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine. Dr. Mills serves as the CEO of Men’s Health Foundation and president of the Southern California Men’s Medical Group in Los Angeles, California. Currently the principal investigator at Mills Clinical Research, Dr. Mills has an extensive research background and has conducted numerous clinical trials for HIV treatment and prevention. Dr. Mills is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, HIV Medical Association, International AIDS Society, IAS-USA, and the American Academy of HIV Medicine.

A discussion with Steven Pounders, MD

Dr. Pounders questions the notion that “thin is in” for people living with HIV, and discusses how when a patient is HIV‑positive, “a lower body mass index is not ideal.”

Dr. Steven Pounders received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and he completed his residency in internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Pounders is an active member of the HIV education community and is the recipient of several honors, including the 2017 Kuchling Humanitarian Award and the 2014 CURE Open Heart Award. An early advocate for patients with HIV, Dr. Pounders’ story was featured in the movie, Dallas Buyer’s Club. He is currently in private practice in Dallas.

A discussion with Daniel Lee, MD

Dr. Lee recounts diagnosing a patient with HIV‑associated wasting who had an undetectable viral load and found it hard to complete daily tasks and gain weight.

Dr. Daniel Lee earned his BS in biology and his MD from the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine. Following his residency in internal medicine at the UCSD Medical Center and Veteran Affairs Medical Center, he completed an HIV/AIDS fellowship at the UCSD Owen Clinic, where he has continued to serve as an instructor and a practicing clinician for more than 20 years. Dr. Lee has served as a principal or co-principal investigator in numerous studies. His research focuses primarily on the metabolic complications of ART. Dr. Lee is active in numerous professional organizations focused on HIV and other infectious diseases.
